Rausu Lake Trekking
by Dylan Robinson
Rausu Lake, in the eastern part of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, is surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Shiretoko Range. It is a picturesque spot that attracts hikers and nature lovers from around the world. The stunning views of Rausu Lake offer a serene and beautiful escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
The Rausu Lake trekking experience is a moderate hike that typically takes between 3-4 hours to complete. The trail starts at the Rausu Visitor Center, where hikers can obtain information about the trail conditions and rent equipment if needed. Boots are a must! From there, the trail leads through lush forests ascending steeply towards the lake.
As hikers approach Rausu Lake, they are greeted with breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains and the crystal-clear waters. The lake is surrounded by dense forests, creating a peaceful atmosphere that is only interrupted by the occasional chirping of birds and rustling of leaves.
More adventurous travelers won’t want to miss a trek to the summit of Mt. Rausu. Standing at an elevation of 1,660 meters, Mount Rausu is the tallest peak in the Shiretoko Range. The hike to the summit is challenging and requires a full day, but the stunning panoramic views of the mountains and the Sea of Okhotsk make it well worth the effort.
In addition to the beautiful scenery, Rausu Lake trekking also offers the opportunity to encounter diverse wildlife, including brown bears, red foxes and Hokkaido sika deer. Hikers are advised to be cautious and carry bear bells or bear spray to avoid any unpleasant encounters.
The best time to go on the Rausu Lake trekking adventure is during the summer months from June to September when the weather is mild and the trails are accessible. Stunning scenery, diverse wildlife and a peaceful atmosphere make Rausu Lake trekking an unforgettable adventure for nature enthusiasts and hikers alike.
